Carbon Management and Climate Change

E-mail Print PDF

As climate change continues to rise on the national and global agenda, public and private sector organisations are increasingly faced with the twin challenges of mitigating and adaptating to climate change.

URSUS Consulting Ltd is assisting clients to meet these challenges in a number of ways, including:

  • Carbon footprinting: assessing current and predicting future carbon emissions arising from geographical areas (eg regions, towns, communities), from sectors of the economy (eg housing), and from consumption patterns and lifestyles.
  • Carbon management: supporting organisations and partnerships in reducing carbon emissions.
  • Low carbon technology and renewable energy: advising on the technologies and technical solutions for carbon reduction.
  • Climate change adaptation: helping organisations to understand how expected changes in climate will impact on their activities and on their stakeholders, and enabling them to plan for, and adapt to, that change.

Case Studies:

  • Carbon footprinting for Local Strategic Partnerships, Yorkshire Forward, 2007-08. Working with eight LSPs in Yorkshire and the Humber to understand the implications for carbon emissions of future development in the district, using carbon footprinting and scenario-building software ‘REAP’. The project aims not only to raise awareness of climate change mitigation among LSPs, but also enables them to decide on priorities for action to achieve carbon reduction targets.
  • Review of Climate Change Leadership, Academy for Sustainable Communities, 2008. Research into community-based climate change activities to identify examples of successful mitigation and/or adaptation projects, and to understand the key factors which make projects succeed, focusing on issues around leadership, skills, and capacity building. Sustainability Appraisal of the Climate Action Plan East, East of England Regional Assembly, 2007-2008. Assessment of the economic, social and environmental implications of a regional plan on climate change mitigation and adaptation, to identify potential problems and opportunities that action on climate change may present for other agendas, eg job creation, economic diversification, biodiversity protection, energy security etc.
